What Is the Difference Between a Free and Premium Track?

Free vs. premium tracks on Insight Timer

Insight Timer offers two distinct audio track formats to help teachers build their audience, establish credibility, and earn meaningful income while providing our community with quality meditation and mindfulness content. Premium tracks are a newer format designed to give teachers an additional avenue to share their teaching and help our community access high-quality, professional-grade content.

Audience — who can access each track type

Free tracks are available to all Insight Timer community members included with your free account. Anyone using the Insight Timer app, visiting our website, or accessing a shareable link to your free track can listen. Free tracks are publicly discoverable and help you build a broad audience. To learn more about free tracks, including technical requirements and best practices, read our guide to free tracks.

Premium tracks are professional-quality audio recordings available exclusively to MemberPlus subscribers as part of their subscription benefit. Only subscribers paying for MemberPlus ($59.99 per year or $9.99 per month) can access premium tracks. This exclusivity makes premium tracks a valuable offering to subscribers. Audio quality and technical requirements

Both free tracks and premium tracks can be guided meditations, talks, music, podcasts, or other audio content — and good audio quality is required for both formats. The Insight Timer community expects clear, clean, well-produced audio regardless of whether they're listening to free or premium content.

However, premium tracks must meet studio-quality technical standards because they're positioned as our premium offering for paying subscribers. Premium tracks require professional-grade audio production and must include carefully selected, high-resolution images and artwork that complement your teaching. Before publishing premium tracks, carefully read our detailed content guidelines for premium tracks to understand the specific audio quality, metadata, and image specifications.

Revenue model and teacher payouts

Payouts for premium tracks are significantly higher than payouts for free tracks, making premium content a more lucrative income opportunity. Here's how the economics work:

Free tracks generate revenue two ways: directly from donations that listeners give, and from a portion of subscription revenue (based on the number of times your free track is played by MemberPlus subscribers).

Premium tracks earn revenue primarily from MemberPlus subscription revenue. Insight Timer allocates a meaningful share of our subscription income directly to teachers based on how many times their premium tracks are played. This means every play of your premium track generates revenue for you — the more listens, the more you earn. Premium tracks also accept donations, so you earn from both subscription plays and donations.

The premium track revenue model is designed to reward teachers for creating high-quality content. Most teachers find that premium tracks provide substantially better income per track than free content.

For a detailed breakdown of how the revenue model works, teacher payment schedules, and specific payout rates, read our comprehensive guide to how teachers earn revenue on Insight Timer.

Choosing between free and premium for your content

Many successful teachers use both formats strategically: publishing some tracks for free to build a broad audience, and publishing their best, most polished work as premium tracks to earn higher income. Starting with free tracks is a great way to establish yourself, build an audience, and understand what kinds of content your listeners respond to.

Once you have an audience and have honed your teaching, premium tracks can significantly increase your earnings.
