From the very beginning of Insight Timer, it has been our core intention and commitment to help teachers, yoga instructors, musicians, and wellness professionals earn meaningful, fair revenue from their work and expertise. We genuinely believe that teachers and creators deserve appropriate compensation for the value, knowledge, time, and creativity they bring to our platform. We've intentionally built multiple revenue streams so teachers can earn in ways that fit their specific content types, teaching style, and business goals.
Available Revenue Streams for Teachers
Teachers on Insight Timer can earn revenue through the following primary methods:
- Subscription Revenue — Earnings from MemberPlus subscription fees
- Donations — Direct financial support from community members who value your work
Each revenue stream has different characteristics and can be leveraged strategically as part of your overall teaching presence on the platform.
1. Subscription Revenue: Sharing MemberPlus Earnings
How Subscription Revenue Works
MemberPlus is Insight Timer's premium subscription offering available to community members. For USD $59.99 per year or USD $9.99 per month, MemberPlus subscribers gain access to exclusive premium content and advanced features, including:
- All Insight Timer courses
- Premium tracks (exclusive meditations and talks)
- Premium timer with extended ambient soundscapes
- Challenges anytime (access to challenge archive)
- Offline listening capability (download audio for offline access)
- Advanced player features (repeat, fast forward, resume)
- Custom folders and personalized milestones
- Advanced journal with enhanced features
How Revenue Is Shared With Teachers
Insight Timer shares its subscription revenue with teachers based on measurable, transparent metrics. Your share is calculated primarily based on:
- Play count — The number of times community members listen to your content. More listens = more revenue shared with you.
- Content type — Different content types (Free Tracks, Premium Tracks, Courses) contribute differently to the revenue share calculation. Premium Tracks, for instance, are weighted more significantly than Free Tracks.
- Listener engagement — How long listeners stay engaged with your content matters.
This means that the more your content is played, the more revenue you'll earn from our subscription model. There's a direct correlation between audience engagement with your content and your earnings.
Bonus Payments for High-Quality, Engaging Content
Teachers whose content achieves a high "return rate" score receive additional bonus payments beyond the standard revenue share. Return rate is a specific metric we track — it measures how often listening to a particular track or course results in a user returning to Insight Timer to meditate again the next day. Essentially, we reward content that keeps people engaged with the platform long-term and builds a sustainable meditation habit.
This bonus structure creates a powerful incentive for teachers to focus on creating genuinely valuable, transformative, engaging content that people want to return to repeatedly — exactly what our community values most. It's not just about quantity of listens, but about the quality and impact of what you create.
Understanding Premium vs. Free Track Revenue
Premium Tracks generate significantly more revenue per play compared to Free Tracks. This is because MemberPlus subscribers are paying for access to this exclusive content, and the revenue share is calculated accordingly. If growing your income is important to you, creating Premium Tracks and Courses can be a more lucrative strategy than focusing solely on Free Tracks, though Free Tracks are excellent for building audience and visibility.
2. Direct Donations: Support From Your Audience
How the Donation System Works
On Insight Timer, community members have the ability to directly support and give back to teachers they deeply value through voluntary donations. When listening to your content, supporters can choose to make a monetary contribution. Your audience has flexibility in choosing how much to donate:
- Preset amounts: $2.99, $7.99, or $30.99
- Custom amount: Your listeners can also choose any custom "other" donation amount up to a maximum of $1,000
Your Donation Revenue and Payouts
You receive 100% of donations from your audience — this is money that goes directly to you with absolutely no cuts or fees taken by Insight Timer. We don't take a percentage. This is a direct relationship between you and your grateful listeners.
Important Note About iOS Donations: Apple takes a 30% platform fee on donations made via Apple devices (iPhones and iPads). This is an Apple App Store requirement, not an Insight Timer fee. This fee does NOT apply to donations made via Android devices. You can check more detailed information about how the donation system works here.
When You Receive Donation Revenue
You receive and can access all donation revenue on a monthly basis. Your donations are clearly itemized and reflected in your monthly earnings statement that we send you.
Getting Paid: Payment System and Schedule
Tipalti: Our Payment Processing Partner
Insight Timer processes all teacher payments through Tipalti, a sophisticated payment and compliance system designed to give teachers flexibility in how they receive their earnings while helping us manage payments smoothly as we scale. Tipalti supports multiple payment methods and currencies. Read our comprehensive guide to our Tipalti payment system to understand all your options.
Monthly Payment Schedule
Teacher payments are processed and issued monthly on a regular, consistent schedule. Payments are issued on the 21st of each calendar month, adhering to PST (Pacific Standard Time) time zone. If the 21st falls on a weekend or holiday (non-working day), Insight Timer processes the payment on the next available working day. You can count on regular, predictable payments as you grow your audience.
Minimum Earnings Threshold
If your total revenue for a given month falls below US$10, you won't receive a separate income statement for that month. Instead, Insight Timer sends you an email notification letting you know your earnings for that month and explaining that the amount didn't meet the $10 minimum. These earnings don't disappear — they carry forward and accumulate into the next month, rolling together until the combined amount reaches the $10 threshold.
Setting Up Your Payment Information
If you haven't already provided your payment information, you'll need to complete your payment details in your Teacher Dashboard under the "Payment Details" tab. This is where you'll link your preferred payment method or PayPal account for receiving your earnings.
What Counts as a Compensable Play
A track play count qualifies for compensation when users listen to at least 120 seconds (2 minutes) of a track's total length. If a track's total duration is shorter than 2 minutes, a play qualifies for compensation only when the track is played in full. This standard ensures that users are genuinely engaging with and benefiting from your content before it counts toward your earnings. Brief skips or partial listens don't count against you or artificially inflate play counts.
What Happens to Unclaimed Earnings
Any earnings that remain unclaimed after 12 months will be donated to charity. This policy encourages teachers to stay active, engaged, and connected with the platform while also ensuring that earnings that aren't being collected are ultimately directed toward meaningful charitable causes.
